New house in Catford, London

In 2002 archipeleco were approached by a client who had purchased a site with Planning Permission for a very small house with a sleeping loft in Catford. The owner wanted to build a home on the site but wanted to improve the previous design and for the project to have some sustainable features.

The site, being very tight and only 5m x 10m in total, was challenging and the final design of the house was for a light and spacious one-bedroom house complete with a south-facing patio.

Even though the budget was tight, the house has a number of features that reduce the impact on the environment. Maximum use of natural daylight reduces the need for electric lighting and natural floor finishes were used throughout. Careful attention to insulation details eliminated all cold bridging and resulted in an air-tight, comfortable house to live in.
