Dulwich

archipeleco was commissioned in 1999 to design an extensive loft conversion in Dulwich, South London. The Edwardian house, owned by a solicitor and a scientist, is on the edge of a conservation area and so sensitive design was critical to the success of the scheme. An extension was built onto the back to accommodate a generous staircase up to the new bedroom, study area and bathroom, using matching materials to blend in with existing. Plenty of natural daylight was introduced into the new spaces by designing a large dormer window, rooflights and glazed wall panels to throw light into all areas of the space. Stained glass panels were used in the stairway with glazing patterns that complemented the existing fenestration and imaginative use of the lower areas of the roof space for storage has resulted in a light and pleasing addition to the house.
