The Old Mill, Chew Magna
archipeleco were appointed by Under the Sky, an organisation based in Bristol promoting urban regeneration, to renovate The Tunbridge Mill in Chew Magna. The village, 8 miles south of Bristol, has been referred to as the “greenest parish in the UK” and the renovation of The Old Mill will be consistent with these high environmental standards by being a low/zero carbon development.
The designs are to convert the mill and several out-buildings into flexible, serviced office spaces for both the local community and those visiting from further away.
The sustainable features of the proposals include:
- Minimising CO2 emissions – through energy efficient design/low carbon technologies such as the water source heat pump and using low embodied energy materials
- Capturing solar energy through passive solar orientation and design
- Generating energy on site using a new water turbine, and roof integrated photovoltaic panels.
- Minimising water consumption – by reducing demand, capturing rainwater and designing a SUDS system
- Minimising waste - during both construction and the occupancy of the building
- Considering biodiversity, provision of local employment and reducing the number of miles travelled.
