New Flats and Community Centre, Corry Drive, London

archipeleco were appointed by HTA to design new housing and a community centre for the Metropolitan Housing Trust in London. The scheme is comprised of 12 flats and a multi-purpose community centre on the ground floor. The design was influenced by the client’s strong sustainability agenda, good townscape design principles and further shaped by a programme of community consultation. The new building fills in the “missing tooth” along the street and presents a new, friendly streetscape.

An EcoHomes ‘Excellent’ rating was achieved by super-insulating the walls to keep energy demand low. The walls were constructed using thin joint block technology. Solar thermal panels on the roof provide hot water to each of the flats. There are large south facing balconies off the living rooms overlooking a small community garden giving each resident a sunny and pleasant aspect.
